Abstract: |
Desk based assessment and field appraisal were undertaken along the proposed route. The scheme was to cross the projected line of the Roman road from Wigan to Walton-le -Dale. A second Roman road was suggested by place-name evidence. Medieval settlement was well documented within the general vicinity of the scheme. The surviving agricultural landscape was largely 18th and 19th century in date. The scheme was also crossed by a canal and a tramway, although no evidence remained of the tramway. Further investigation was recommended. [Au(abr)] |
