Abstract: |
A desk-based study of the proposed site of a residential college identified that earthworks representing a probable medieval field system were present at the site. A major ditch, with an embankment thought to have been at least partly man-made, lay to the east of the site, and could potentially be affected by works associated with the development. A further post-medieval boundary wall could also be affected. Several buildings lay within the site, including a Grade II Listed farmhouse, a second farmhouse, two barns and a barn or cowshed. It was not known whether or not the buildings would be incorporated into the development. It was recommended that further documentary research and a topographical survey of the earthworks should be carried out, and that a watching brief should be maintained during topsoil stripping.
