Abstract:
The assessment identified a high potential for the occurrence of Palaeolithic sites, particularly in association with brickearth deposits upon the higher river terraces and plateaux. An assemblage of geometric projectile points from Luton Hoo itself and finds in the region demonstrated a high Mesolithic potential. Fieldwork elsewhere in the Chiltern region suggested that Neolithic and Bronze Age sites should have been present, whilst a rapid reconnaissance survey identified a possible tumulus. A high incidence of sites and finds of Iron Age and Roman date within the Study area as a whole suggested a similar level of survival for the Luton Hoo Estate. The archaeological record for medieval activity was less extensive than for the Iron Age and Roman periods. Ancient trees embedded in the present landscape suggested an earlier wooded landscape. Included in this study were sites that related to the World War II defence of Britain. [Au(abr)]
