Abstract:
The desk-based archaeological assessment for the proposed redevelopment of the site showed that the site lay within the walls of Roman and medieval Leicester. The site lay close to known Roman sites including the forum (market place), Jewry Wall public baths and Mithraeum (temple) and occupied a position along the riverfront. Late Iron Age, Roman and medieval evidence had been recovered from a site immediately adjacent to the development area on Bath Lane. Evidence for a first century timber building with associated infant burial and later stone built dwelling constructed on a terrace were found on this site. The latter building fell into disrepair and was partly demolished in the fourth century. The demolition deposits contained tesserae, decorated wall plaster and hypocaust tiles indicative of a high status building. The proposed development area, therefore, was recognised as having an archaeological potential. Archaeological field evaluation was recommended to better ascertain the archaeological potential and aid in the design of any future development proposals and mitigation strategies. [Au(abr)]
