Abstract: |
The development site was situated within the historic core of Mitchell, which was a medieval borough, and lay within the area designated as an Historic Settlement and a Conservation Area. Above ground archaeological remains comprised of Cornish hedges enclosing medieval burgage plots and three 19th century buildings. These burgage plot boundaries helped to define the nature of early town settlement, and were an important visual element of the historic landscape. Despite the loss of some boundaries and truncation by the A30 bypass, the distinctive parallel strip pattern of the burgage plots was still apparent. There was also high potential for the survival of below ground remains in those undeveloped areas adjacent to the road, where medieval buildings may have previously stood. There was some potential within undeveloped areas away from the road, where buried boundary and building remains may have survived, and where medieval (and later) pot sherds were collected during the assessment.
