Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of two areas proposed for future development identified that several archaeological sites lay within the areas, including a medieval cross which was a Scheduled Ancient Monument (no. 220). The remaining sites consisted of an undated boundary, a post-medieval Listed milestone, the site of a medieval park, and the findspots of two medieval arrowheads and some possible Saxon pottery. Remains recorded in the surrounding area included two further medieval crosses, one of which was also a SAM ( no. 221), Late Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age artefacts, a Romano-British building and a 12th-13th century church. It was noted that the well-drained, light soils of the area would have provided ideal agricultural land for prehistoric farmers, and thus had potential to have been occupied at this time. It was concluded that archaeology would be a factor in future negotiations to secure planning permission. [AIP] |
