Abstract: |
A review of existing archaeological and historical data was undertaken to provide an initial assessment of the likely archaeological implications of the proposed improvement of the A37 between Key Bridge and the southern limits of Yeovil. The principal area of interest related to the possible presence of the Roman road from Dorchester to Ilchester which was believed to lie under the course of the present A37. The study was unable to provide any further evidence of the road's presence. Two areas of archaeological interest were identified; the site of a former roadside cottage of at least 19th-century date and a small area of slight earthworks believed to be medieval ridge and furrow.
