Abstract: |
A new storm-water drainage system was installed in the churchyard of St Nicholas' Church, Great Yarmouth. This necessitated the excavation of a series of pipe trenches on the southern, western and northern sides of the church. Unmarked graves were disturbed and a large amount of human skeletal material was seen; in addition, several brick tombs, one of which contained a lead coffin, were located to the south and west of the church. Two large in situ fragments of masonry walls to the west of the church, in line with the north and south walls, were seen. These were probably part of the former west transept, an abortive 14th century extension to the church. Perhaps the most significant find was made to the east of the church, where the pipeline crossed the line of a demolished section of Yarmouth Town Wall. At this point a remnant of a demolished defensive tower was discovered. [Au] |
