Abstract: |
A review of aerial photographs was carried out for a study area covering the proposed site of a gravel quarry. Previous archaeological assessment of the site had involved the monitoring of geotechnical test pits, a geophysical survey feasibility study and fieldwalking. No evidence of archaeological deposits had been recorded, although displaced artefacts were recovered during fieldwalking. Examination of aerial photographs revealed soilmarks and a cropmark, representing a possible field boundary, a possible ring ditch and a possible enclosure or boundary. A quarry and a feature which may have been of geological origin were also observed. It was concluded that there was no evidence for the presence of cropmarks in the north-western part of the study area, an area previously defined as being of high archaeological potential. [AIP] |
