Abstract: |
Documentary research revealed that the well was, until the last century, the most important source of drinking water for the town. It was likely to have been the focus of the earliest settlement in the area and featured in the 12th century "life" of St Petroc, the patron saint of the church. Although there were references to work to the well and the aqueducts in the churchyard from the 16th century, remains of this phase are all below ground. The present well house, which incorporated much re-used masonry, probably dated from the early 19th century and incorporated a number of 20th century additions.[Au(abr)] |
