Abstract: |
Standing just outside the south porch to the church of St Mary at Callington was a fine, but sadly mutilated, example of a Gothic lantern cross. The cross was believed to have been carved at about the same time as the church was rebuilt in the 1430s and to have been the focus of the new churchyard, consecrated in 1438. Its decoration was hacked off and mutilated just over a hundred years later, at the time of the Reformation. A site visit in 1996 noted that the cross was in a bad condition. Reconsoliation and repair works were undertaken in 1997, the process being recorded archaeologically. [AIP] |
