Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out. A number of prehistoric and Roman findspots were within the area. Later water powered sites were established along the rivers. Several corn mills and cutler's wheels were known and quarries and mining also existed. Many sites were 20th century allotment gardens, some of which were still in use. Coppice and woodland management had also taken place. Above ground features included remains of water powered sites, quarrying and mining remains, former tramways associated with the clay pits, stone boundary walls, trackways, some possibly associated with the parliamentary enclosure of 1792-3 or earlier.
