Abstract:
A desktop study of two sites at Temple Meads railway station was undertaken to assess the archaeological implications of a proposed office and two-storey car park development. The study showed that the two assessment sites were located in an area that had only been developed since the late 18th century. Site 'A', currently occupied by Collet House and Herbert House was first developed when John Hare founded a floor-cloth factory in 1788. This survived until 1839 when the site was redeveloped and the B&ER engine house and carriage-shed were built. The engine house was in turn demolished in c1870 and the carriage shed in 1935. Site 'B', in use as a raised level car park, similary was water meadows until c1840 when Brunel's railway station was built and the area was used as railway sidings built on arches above the fields. The sidings became part of the Harbour Railwaty line in the late 1860's. The line was later closed and had been demolished by 1992, with only a surviving remnant being located on site 'B'. [Au(adp)]
