Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was undertaken of proposed road widening at Colesloggett. The assessment consisted of a desk-based study and a walkover survey. The Coleslogget section of the proposed road improvement was c.1.5m long and dealt with the series of bends in the road between Turfdown Crossroads and Cardinham Railway Bridge. It was understood that road widening would mainly affect land to the south and east of the existing road alignment. The historic character of the landscape in this segment was farmland grading into the steep-sided valley of the Carminow Water. The farmland was part anciently enclosured land, associated with the medieval settlement of Colesoggett, and part recently enclosed land, enclosed from commons in the earlier 19th century. Individual sites identified included a possible Iron Age/Romano-British round, a quarry, a milestone, a boundary stone, and extant and removed field boundaries. The current road line was an early 19th century turnpike road. The surviving original field boundaries would mostly be regarded as 'important' according to the criteria of the 1997 Hedgerow Regulations. The possible round was potentially a site of national importance. The other known sites were regarded as of local importance. Overall adverse impact on individual sites was regarded as slight in view of the local importance of the sites and the scope for mitigation. The site of the round was unlikely to be affected by the proposed improvements. The impact on the settings and integrity of the historic character of the landscape was regarded as 'slight adverse impact' because of the historic field pattern would be diminished. The report recommended that careful design and landscaping of the road would reduce the visual impact. The hedges should be rebuilt using local techniques and materials (including reuse of original gateposts) and planted with beech trees. A programme of archaeological recording, to include: recording of field boundaries, watching brief during works to record sites and recover artefacts was recommended. [Au(abr)]
