Abstract:
A desktop study, a fieldwalking survey and geophysical survey, was undertaken in advance of the proposed quarrying development on the site. The desk-based assessment concluded that the site lay within an area of known prehistoric and Romano-British significance. No archaeological evaluation was known from the site itself, but this was not surprising given that it had not been developed or subjected to intrusive groundworks within the modern period. To the north-west lay a probable Romano-British site at Crow Wood, the extent of which had never been accurately determined. To the north-east, development of the A614 road had resulted in a number of archaeological finds. The close proximity of the settlement and finds therefore suggested that the proposed Austerfield site was likely to have been archaeologically sensitive. No artefacts of pre-19th century date were recorded. The fluxgate gradiometer survey detected three anomalies which may have represented archaeological activity. Two curvilinear anomalies were recorded in the southern part of the extraction area and a single discrete anomaly in the north. [Au(adp)]
