Abstract: |
The evaluation consisted of a series of trenches of varying sizes across the rear of the garden. First indications were the substantial overburden of post-medieval/recent soil accumulation covered at least one, possibly two structures of medieval date fronting Green Lane. One crude stone wall aligned east-west marked the south edge of the building. There was also a hearth and the remains of a wattle and daub wall; this predated the stone wall and may have been associated with an earlier sunken floored building. This wattle and daub structure had been burnt down. A trench at the rear of the site produced a substantial stone flagged floor, the remains of a clay cob wall and a medieval shell midden. Metalwork was minimal, comprising some scarp bronze, an iron clench nail and part of a knife. A needle and a pin, both of animal bone, were found. Several gullies and pits were found in two of the trenches; these appeared to cut even earlier gullies. [Sec(adp)] |
