Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a tennis and health club revealed that many archaeological sites had been recorded in the immediate vicinity. The site itself lay within the grounds of the 16th century Nonsuch Palace, and a Saxon mount had been found there. Remains recorded within a 1km radius included Lower Palaeolithic and Mesolithic flints, evidence of Iron Age occupation, the routes of Roman Stane Street and a further supposed Roman road, evidence of Romano-British occupation, and the site of a deserted medieval village. During a site visit, it was noted that dense planting of mature trees and the foundations of former nursery buildings could have damaged any underlying archaeological deposits. It was concluded that trial trenching would be the most efficient method of ascertaining the true potential of the site. [AIP] |
