Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken prior to the determination of planning permission for the proposed residential development of the site. The earliest deposits recorded formed part of a late post-medieval, probably late 18th/early 19th century infilling of a presumably deep and extensive pit. The nature of the backfill indicated that it was originally a quarry pit. The two upper horizons may have been related to modern disturbance of the ground surface by the recent demolition of a modern building on the site. A single modern concrete foundation was noted. No other features were observed. Mid 18th to early 20th century plans of the area showed the plot as first orchards, later subdivided by the later 19th century into individual plots of roughly equal size. [Au(adp)] |
