Abstract: |
Excavations were carried out to the rear of Ford Green Hall, a 17th century timber- framed yeoman's farmhouse which was administered as a museum. Evidence of the construction of outbuildings of early 18th century date and earlier use of the site in the medieval period was revealed. Finds included pottery ranging in date from the medieval period to the late 19th-early 20th century, together with assemblages of bone, metalwork and leather. A later watching brief recorded a small area of a brick surface and sandstone foundations for a garden wall. The foundations seemed more substantial than would be expected for such a wall, and may have represented the line of an earlier wall of unknown function, although they could also have indicated re-use of available materials on site. Alternatively, substantial foundations may have been considered necessary due to the sloping nature of the ground. [Au(adp)] |
