Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed route of a Metrolink extension identified a number of sites of varying archaeological significance. The most important of these were the sites of the Stockport Ring Spinning Mill, Brinksway Mill with its associated weir, and the Chestergate Print Works, all of which could be seriously affected by the proposals. Other areas of archaeological sensitivity which the development might potentially encroach on included three 18th and 19th century cotton spinning mills on the south bank of the Mersey in Stockport town centre. Prehistoric archaeology could be encountered in the Mersey Valley, as might the alignment of a Roman road in the eastern part of the study zone. Further sites of interest in the vicinity included a hat factory, a disused railway, reservoirs and the bricked-up entrances to air raid shelters. [Au(adp)] |
