Abstract: |
The purpose of the desk-based assessment was to show the archaeological and historical background of the proposed development area. All known sites and possible impacts on the area were evaluated and listed. No archaeological deposits or finds had previously been recovered from the proposed extraction area. Beechburn Grange, c.500m north of the site, was a Grade II Listed Building. Several aerial photographic cropmark sites, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, medieval and post-medieval sites were known within 2km of the site. Cartographic evidence showed that the area had been arable farm land prior to the present Beechburn Farm Sand and Gravel extraction in the south-western part of the area. [Au(abr)] |
