Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which lay close to the historic core of Doncaster. A Roman road passed nearby, and part of a Roman cemetery had been excavated in the vicinity. The evaluation revealed that the site appeared to have been used as gardens or agricultural land prior to the 20th century. A number of post-holes, stake-holes and slot trenches were found which represented property boundaries of the late 18th and 19th centuries. The subsoil appeared to have seen agricultural activity in the middle ages, with finds including abraded sherds of Roman and medieval pottery. It was concluded that further evaluation work would reveal little of consequence about the early development of the site. [Au(adp)] |
