Abstract: |
Nothing of particular interest was revealed in the southern part of the site, just poorly consolidated clinker and industrial waste associated with a former smelting works. The northern part of the site was more successful. Two stone walls of 19th century date were revealed. Earlier material of 19th century origin comprised a deep deposit of humic soil, almost certainly reflecting the presence of former gardens. An earlier soil horizon, which was revealed in all trenches, appeared well preserved and yielded an assemblage of medieval (c11th-13th century) pottery. The layer was suggested to represent a later medieval horizon, quite likely to have been laid out along West Street to the north during the medieval period. [Au(abr)] |
