Abstract: |
Two trenches were excavated within the vaults east of the western range within Peterborough Cathedral Precincts, to test the theory that elements of the monastic and later drain system ran through the area. A ground probing radar survey of the area had detected a llinear anomaly, tentatively interpreted as evidence of the existence of culverts or drains. The trenches revealed three salt glazed drain pipe runs, a copper water pipe and a brick culvert. An earlier culvert survived as a mortared limestone wall. An assemblage of pottery spanning the 10th to the 19th centuries was recovered. A watching brief was also maintained during the early stages of groundworks within the western range, and layers relating to construction of the range in 1727 were noted. [AIP] |
