Abstract: |
Holme Bridge was a post-medieval packhorse bridge across the river Wye in Bakewell. An archaeological watching brief was maintained during desilting work immediately downstream of the bridge. This also allowed environmental samples to be taken from accumulated silt deposits. No archaeological or architectural features were damaged or exposed. Environmental sampling produced a pollen sequence from the silts, which was tentatively dated to the medieval or post-medieval period and allowed a vegetational history to be constructed. One radiocarbon date was obtained from the base of the pollen sequence, which produced a middle Neolithic date. It was argued that this may have been an anomalous result. Historical research had allowed the bridge to be placed in a local and regional context. [Au(abr)] |
