Abstract:
Archaeological recording was undertaken following topsoil stripping of a corridor for the construction of the flood defence wall at the site of Neasham Abbey. A strip 1.5m wide, mainly along the northern side of the corridor was cleaned by hand (although larger areas were cleaned in places). Sample excavation of archaeological deposits within the corridor was then undertaken. Awidespread demolition layer, probably derived from a stone built structure, containing fragments of angular red sandstone with an occasional fragment of worked stone was identified as the earliest deposit. Removal of the deposit towards the east end of the trench revealed possible wall lines or robbed foundations. In the central areea of the trench the deposits may have been contained within a large pit, or several pits. The full extent of the demolition layerand its date was not easy to establish, although the mixed assemblage of later medieval andpost-medieval pottery recoverd was consistent with the Dissolution period. Painted wall plaster and window glass from the demolition layers also pointed to the existence of a building of some status in the area. At the extreme western end of the trench a series of in-situ stone floor deposits was recorded, which were thought to be contemporary with the use of the Priory. [AIP]
