Abstract: |
A desk-based study was undertaken to assess the archaeological constraints and implications of development of land at Fortune Lane. The study identified that the site had little or no potential for surviving remains of prehistoric, Saxon, medieval and early post-medieval periods (with the exception of the possible survival of field boundaries from agricultural activities during some of these periods). Traces of Roman settlement, particularly related to the pottery and tile industries of the 1st century AD however were indicated as potentially surviving on the site, although the focus to any settlement would have been to the west, north-west and north-east of the site. No significant later post-medieval features were located on the site, the former garden area of Summerfield House considered as not being of archaeological interest. Areas of modern disturbance were also identified. [Au(adp)] |
