Abstract: |
Three small projects were undertaken around the south and west sides of the outer defences and the motte of the castle. The moat project consisted of the retainment of the banks by means of driving the posts into the silty mud. If the posts had been dug, the rapid inflow of water into the holes would have prevented observation of any archaeological deposits. Four holes were dug for two bicycle stands. The only artefacts observed were that of two brick fragments. The Cascade project entailed the removal of stone work from the raised area on the south side of an ornamental pond. It seemed likely that the raised area was formed from an accumulation of soil derived from the creation of the pond and that below this level the natural slope of the land rises up to that of the bailey of the castle.[Au(abr)] |
