Abstract: |
The Grand Shaft is one of the most impressive monuments making up the extensive 19th century fortifications and links the fortress on the hill with the town. Investigations were carried out in order to enhance its preservation and appearance at street level. The Snargate Street entrance has suffered severe damage and has lost most of its associated military structures. Two excavated trenches across the site exposed structural remains including the North-East Range and gave evidence of the structural development of the building through three stages. [AIP] |
