Abstract:
A study was undertaken to assess the archaeological implications of proposed development at four sites within the city of Durham. The study also incorporated the results of the observation of 13 boreholes and 23 test pits undertaken for mostly engineering purposes. The area of Bishop's Mill (encompassing the area of the former Henderson's Carpet Manufactory), derived its archaeological potential mostly from the possible survival of remains of structures associated with the medieval mill alongside the western boundary of the development site. The potential of the remainder of the site was not known, but there was no documentary evidence to suggest medieval or later remains were likely to be present. The second site, at Claypath North, was been shown by archaeological investigations to contain stratified remains from the 12th century onwards at a depth between 0.2 metres and 0.7 metres in areas not affected by later cellars. The third site, at Leazes Bridge was of low archaeological potential with remains surviving either as isolated islands of deposits between cellars within the frontage area or as truncated deposits within the embankment. The fourth site, at Leazes Bowl, was shown to be of high archaeological potential with remains potentially having survived below later development. This area was of particular importance as it lay within the medieval core of the historic City centre associated with the cathedral and castle buildings on the Peninsula (designated as a World Heritage Site).
