Abstract:
The study area comprised a 2.9k long corridor for a new water pipeline from Newman Lane, Chale to St. Catherine's Hill reservoir, together with a discrete area just to the north of Chillerton village. Evidence from several sources were examined, including the SMR, aerial photographs, cartographic, historical and a walkover survey. The results highlighted a number of specific areas of interest along the pipeline route. St. Catherine's Hill in particular, and to a lesser extent Gore Down were areas identified as having a significant potential for later prehistoric, particularly Bronze Age, remains. Existing medieval lynchets on Gore Down were noted as important archaeological features, while the vicinity of Chale Farm (the site of 14th-century Chale Manor House) and Chillerton were flagged up as areas of moderate medieval potential. There was a significant probability of post-medieval remains, particularly field boundary ditches, being encountered just to the south of Chale village and beside Newport Road. In addition, there was a possibility that further post-medieval remains lie on St. Catherine's Hill, in the vicinity of Chale Farm and at Chillerton. [Au(abr)]
