Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken in advance of housing development. The excavation was the second archaeological intervention within the development area, concentrating on the focus of archaeological potential as defined by previous archaeological exploratory work. Areas 4 & 5 measured 4.5m by 8m and c.50 by 30m respectively. Area 5 contained a heavily truncated early Bronze Age ring ditch with no associated finds or features and a possible late prehistoric roundhouse. Over nine hundred of the archaeological features seen in Area 5 were of Middle Saxon date. These consisted of two clusters of intercutting pits with some possible occupational evidence and a complex of drainage/boundary ditches. 31 sherds of Ipswich ware were recovered along with other possible Middle Saxon sherds. The site yielded a considerable quantity (27g) of animal and bird bone. Along with large quantities of horse and cattle bone remains, this potentially highly significant faunal assemblage contained the remains of unusual wild species such as dolphin/porpoise and white tailed sea eagle.
