Abstract: |
Desk based assessment of a proposed development site identified that no evidence of activity pre-dating the medieval period had been recorded in the immediate vicinity, although Bronze Age pottery, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and Romano-British findspots and remains had been found in the surrounding area. The site lay close to the centre of the medieval town of Rothwell, and Rothwell Nunnery was thought to lie nearby. Documentary evidence indicated that late medieval or early post-medieval buildings had probably fronted onto Wales Street. It was found that modern disturbance and contamination had affected parts of the site. [AIP] |
