Abstract: |
Desk-based study of a proposed redevelopment site was undertaken. Examination of historic maps indicated that it lay within the southern quarter of the town, a medieval suburb located between the South Gate and the River Nene. The proposal site lay in close proximity to the town's medieval and Civil War defences, a series of medieval and post-medieval tenements, and the site of St Thomas's Hospital, which was founded in c. 1450 and demolished in 1874-6.
