Abstract: |
An evaluation excavation was undertaken in advance of a development involving the demolition of an existing building and the construction of a new five storey building. Four trenches were dug within the building and one trench was in the yard to the south. A similar sequence of deposits was exposed in all trenches except the northern trench, which was on the street frontage. In this trench there was a series of four late-medieval layers and a north-south wall of re-used limestone rubble bonded with brickearth, which was likely to have been late medieval or Tudor. Pre-18th century deposits were exposed in every trench. The southern part of the site was probably used as fields or orchards in the period AD1100-AD1500. By this time the Tudor buildings were placed on the street frontage and it was possible that medieval buildings lay beneath them. Activities in the backyards of these properties included industrial processes in the 17th/18th century. [Au(adp)] |
