Abstract: |
14 evaluation trenches excavated in response to a condition upon planning permission for the development of the site. Archaeological features were revealed in trenches 7-10 comprising a substantial part of a large feature, possibly an enclosure ditch or large quarry, probably of Early Iron Age date. A group of three trackways were also recorded, the southernmost two following parallel north-west to south-east alignments cutting across the contours of Barham Downs. A third, and probably more important, northern trackway was aligned east-west and connected Barham to the Dover Road. The three trackways, however, were probably contemporary and were certainly in use as late as the mid-18th century, although the date when the routes were first laid out was uncertain. The remaining features recorded were probably all modern in date. [Au(abr)] |
