Abstract:
One trench measuring 3m by 3.5 m was excavated to the rear of 9-11 London Street. The earliest phase of activity found was an Anglo-Norman timber building of unusual construction. This building lay on a shallow bank of soft sands adjacent to the presumed course of the Great Cockey, the largest of the now culverted steams of the Wensum. Thereafter the site was used as an open yard or garden to the 15th century stone building on the London Street frontage. Two vaulted side chambers in the existing basement are the surviving parts of this building. In the late 16th or early 17th century the building was replaced wit the extant of the 9-11 London Street buildings. During this process the ground levels to the rear of the buildings was raised by c.2m. Towards the end of this phase of construction a brick and flint north-to-south nature of this feature only became apparent during a watching brief following the main phase of fieldwork. This culvert almost certainly carried the course of the Great Cockey during the 17th and much of the 18th centuries. From the 17th century the site was used as a yard or garden, being built up with a succession of outhouses and storerooms from the late 19th or early 20th centuries. [Au(abr)]
