Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out within the Castle Park in Warwick, a Grade I Registered Park, where it was proposed to construct a new kiosk, path and bus turning place. Remains relating to the medieval and post-medieval town were found beneath 18th-19th century landscaping material. A probably truncated series of 17th/18th century street surfaces overlaid a medieval make-up layer, which itself sealed earlier features which were not investigated. Medieval contexts in one area included a yard surface and a ditch or pit. Pottery dating from the 12th/13th century to the 19th century was recovered. An upstanding landscape bank investigated in three of the four trenches appeared to be a wholly 19th century feature. It was concluded that the proposed development would be unlikely to have a significant effect on surviving remains, due to the depths of 18th-19th century landscaping material. [Au(adp)] |
