Abstract: |
An evaluation, excavation and watching brief were undertaken prior to proposed residential development. The excavations identified that a range of buildings in Trench 2 continued into Trench 5. This range of buildings went through several modifications over time with at least 4 phases of construction identified. No cellars were identified within Trench 5, in contrast to Trench 2, where a substantial cellar was found to survive. The structure and form of the buildings suggested that they were probably industrial in nature and part of the Top Pottery complex which dated from the first half of the 19th century. A trampled yard surface lay to the south of this range of buildings and the yard surface had been patched during its lifetime. Several dump deposits relating to pottery production were identified. These dumps were both inside and outside the building and contained wasters, saggers and kiln furniture. [Au(abr)] |
