Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of part of the precinct of Blackburn Cathedral was carried out in advance of the cutting of a cable trench. It was found that the proposed site lay in the north-west corner of the pre-1796 churchyard, and that a burial monument and/or vault had existed on the edge of the site. A church dating from the 14th century or earlier and demolished in the 19th century had lain nearby, to the north-west of the present cathedral. It was noted that deposits at the site were likely to have been damaged by graveyard clearance and re-profiling of topography. A watching brief during trench excavation was recommended. [AIP] |
