Abstract: |
This excavation formed part of ongoing archaeological investigation into the area and was the location of the Ringlemere gold cup, which was discovered in 2001 (now in the British Museum as part of the Treasure Trove Act). Trench 5, part of a hitherto unknown Anglo-Saxon cemetery, included eight inhumations and five urn cremations. Grave goods found with the inhumations included; two fine glass claw beakers, decorated beads, knives and buckles. A small pit adjacent to Grave 2 could have been an associated cremation pyre. Centuries of ploughing removed the base of the barrow mound on site. Excavation of this area revealed a significant collection of Grooved Ware (4000 sherds) and Neolithic struck flints. Also a small hearth could have been of Neolithic date. Further archaeological excavation was planned which was especially needed due to the ploughing damage that was occurring on the site. [AIP] |
