Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a site where four Romano-British pottery kilns, together with a waster heap extending for more than an acre, had been excavated during the 19th century. Other kilns had been recorded in the area, and Iron Age pottery and coins had been found. A farm on the edge of the site which was a Grade II* Listed Building was reputed to represent the surviving above ground remains of a medieval nunnery. During the evaluation, an Early Bronze Age post hole containing pottery was revealed. Residual prehistoric flint flakes and sherds of Iron Age pottery were found across the site. Several anomalies detected during a geophysical survey were found to represent Roman kilns; three phases of kilns and pottery production were identified. Ditches which probably represented Romano-British field boundaries were also recorded. A medieval ditch and two post holes, containing 12th-15th century pottery, were found. Further features of possible medieval date included two pits, further ditches and a possible pond. Post-medieval features included a cess pit, field boundaries and building remains. [AIP] |
