Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a nursing home. Several prehistoric findspots had been recorded in the surrounding area, but their exact locations were unknown and none were thought to have lain within 1km of the proposal site. Evidence of late Saxon settlement had been recorded nearby. During the evaluation, slight tree root disturbance was noted, which had been sealed beneath cultivation levels which included substantial deposits of possible garden soil of 19th century date. The soils had been cut by a number of recent features, including the foundations of 20th century buildings, and a pit and two walls of 19th or 20th century date. A small amount of pottery was recovered which was generally of a 19th century date, but which included a few sherds of early post-medieval types. [AIP] |
