Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of a residential dwelling. A single trench was excavated and recorded which revealed evidence for probable Roman street metallings as well as an earlier linear feature most likely a field boundary ditch. Dating evidence for the Roman street was recovered in the form of a substantial portion of Drag.31 central Gaulish dish from c.AD 120 to AD 180. The small streets apparently formed part of a suburb of the Roman town of Canterbury. The presence of a possible ditch which certainly predated the Roman street metallings may have indicated that field systems associated with a transitional Late pre-Roman Iron Age to early-Roman settlement at Westgate Gardens extended across the area. Recent excavations at St. Dunstan's Terrace to the west and Orchard Street to the east have also found parts of a field system which may have been contemporary. [Au(adp)]
