Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken during the replacement of a defunct sewerage pipe. Rufford Abbey comprised the remains of the Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century and the 17th to 18th century house developed by the Savile family. The trench within the Scheduled Area revealed an apparent natural soil profile and post-medieval/recent deposits and features. The south end of the trench produced a concentration of finds of stone rubble, brick, tile, pottery, a large quantity of bottle glass, some window lead and window glass and three green-glazed floor tiles and a green glazed roof tile fragment. The tiles at least were probably medieval and were presumably derived from the demolished Abbey buildings. The bottle glass and pottery was of 18th century date. There were no obvious related structural features in the trench, and the area appeared to have been used for the dumping of waste. [Au(abr)]
