Abstract:		 A comprehensive landscape assessment was undertaken for the county of Cornwall. The survey characterised the landscape of Cornwall on the basis of a three tier system of mapping; a first stage of categoriation into Historic Landscape Character Types, representing fragmented detail of the present landscape; a second stage of identification of Historic Landcape Character Zones, representing simplified and generalised categorisation and mapping of historic components to demonstrate the spatial distribution, historical process and historic character of the landscape; and a final stage of identification of Historic Landscpe Areas, representing discrete blocks of landscape dominated by a single historic process/event, or containing several related historic Landscape Zones.
