Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in order to assess the impact of a proposed residential development. Redeposit sandy clay and gravel deposits were exposed forming the upper backfill deposits of a large quarry pit, the full extent and depth of which was not determined. Pottery and finds indicated a possible medieval date (c.AD1250-1450). The backfilled quarry was overlain by an intermixed soil horizon, characteristic of horticultural activity and corresponded to land use indicated on post-medieval maps. Archaeological features and deposits identified above this soil horizon were of a late post-medieval and modern date, corresponding to activity in the rear garden of the existing property. Features included three refuse pits, a brick lined well, and perhaps the chalk footings for a garden shed or glass house. [Au(adp)] |
