Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for a reclamation and opencast coal extraction scheme identified that a colliery had been established there in 1894 and that a farm had lain on the site. The farmhouse and associated buildings had been depicted on a tithe map of c. 1840 and on the 1988 OS map, but had since been demolished. Sites recorded in the near vicinity included a clay pit, a stone quarry, a spoil tip, a coal pit and two coal shafts. Three cropmark sites, thought to have represented Iron Age or Romano-British enclosures, had also been recorded nearby. It was noted that important historic hedgerows lay within part of the site, but that the impact of the development on these could be minimised. It was recommended that provision should be made for a watching brief during topsoil stripping and extraction in an area of old workings which had been recorded, and during topsoil stripping of previously undisturbed areas.
