Abstract: |
A watching brief was held during improvements to reunite Horse Guards Parade with St James' Park in order to reopen the area as a public space. Most observations and discoveries related to the build up of ground for making the parade ground or its subsequent maintenance, but traces of earlier features were recorded in a few places. They included the walls of a building known to have existed in the south-east corner of the site during the 16th and 17th centuries, and deposits associated with the backfilling of the former watercourse beneath the present Horse Guards Parade.
