Abstract: |
An archaeological shovel pit testing survey was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development. The survey covered two fields over 14.5 ha and revealed a total of 873 objects. Of these, many were not diagnostic (coal, coke, slag, slate, animal bone, shell, non-local stone) or were relatively modern and appeared to be part of a typical pattern of residual deposition and/or manuring (brick and tile, metal, glass, clay pipe, post-medieval pottery, cement, plastic). The remaining material consisted of 400 objects, comprising 307 pieces of burnt flint, 45 worked flints, 44 sherds of medieval pottery and four sherds of prehistoric pottery. This material was interpreted as residual background scatter and represented an enduring pattern of transient activity through the area over millennia. [Au(adp)] |
